“I love the empowerment (Tri Kappa) gives women,” says Maria Douglas. “When women get together, amazing things can happen.”
Maria and her husband, James, are busy most days hustling their children, Avery and Ezra, to their various school and athletic activities. Coupled with a full-time job at Express Employment Professionals on Bloomington’s southside, Maria doesn’t have a lot of free time.
“I tried some other philanthropic stuff,” Maria says. “I sat on a couple boards and it was so time-consuming. (Tri Kappa) is a one-stop shop to give back to the community and be involved."
A member since 2016, the Arcadia native loves the social aspect of Tri Kappa, as well as the philanthropic angle.
Maria loves reconnecting with women from her past, such as Bethany Murray, her mentor when she worked at IU Center for Behavioral Health, or Mary Jane Hall, whom she knew from exercise classes. Jaimie Schwartzman is the friend who encouraged her to join Tri Kappa.
Making new friends is an added bonus to attending the monthly meetings.
After studying social work at Indiana University, Maria likes how Tri Kappa addresses local needs, both big and small.
“I do adore the Small Sacrifice we collect every month,” Maria says. “But, oh, my gosh! Blingo was super fun!”
